Frequently asked questions

What is USPS Ground Advantage and how does it differ from First-Class Package?
USPS Ground Advantage launched in July 2023, consolidating First-Class Package Service, Retail Ground, and Parcel Select Ground into one service. Delivery is 2–5 business days within the contiguous 48 states. Free tracking and $100 insurance are included. The key advantages over the old First-Class Package: no weight limit confusion (Ground Advantage goes up to 70 lbs), accepts ground-eligible hazmat including lithium batteries, and has no residential delivery surcharge.
When should I use Priority Mail Flat Rate vs Ground Advantage?
Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes work best when your package is heavy relative to its size AND you're shipping long distances. The break-even against Ground Advantage for the Medium Flat Rate Box ($16.10 commercial) is roughly 3–4 lbs at Zone 7. Under that weight or for short-zone shipments, Ground Advantage is almost always cheaper. Flat Rate is also useful when you need the 1–3 day delivery window or want to use free USPS packaging.
